What is TESL?
Tesl is an acronym for Teaching of English as a Second Language. ESL (English as a second language), ESOL (English for speaker of other languages), and EFL (English as a foreign language) all refer to the use or study of English by speakers with different native language. these terms are most commonly used in relation to teaching and learning English, but they may also be used in relation to demographic information.don't let it fools you. it's not necessary to become a teacher. there's a lot of other job opportunities for TESL. you'll also learn 4 major components which are grammar, literature, language development (similiar as MUET) and social studies.TESL in UiTM. How to get in?
there's various universities and collages that offer TESL. so you can choose any that you like or feel comfortable with. i'll only share TWO of it which is UiTM and KPLSPM a.k.a IPG so how to apply? okie, it's easy! for UiTM, simply apply through UPU system. tak tau apa tu UPU? UPU is Unit Pusat Universiti which is a site for all SPM leavers for application to enrol in higher institutional. anyway, you can also apply it under UiTM site.
Requirements
Asasi TESL requirements:
1. Acquire "kepujian" for either of these subjects in SPM (Mathematics/AddMaths)
2. Acquire at least an A- in SPM for English
you'll be called for an interview and written test and if only you pass both of it, you are officially a TESL student :D
the most terrifying for students out there is the faculty's interview am i right? well, let me clear this it is not something to be afraid of! chillax guys the interviewers are not monsters. are they? HAHA~ so what to prepare for the interview? first of all, read some current news. don't forget to google about education systems such as Sekolah Kluster, NKRA, Sekolah Wawasan etc. this was asked during my interview! you must also be confident and at least don't show that you are sweating your palm in front of the interviewers. the key is to keep calm and be confident. that is what the interviewers look for actually. i still remember my interview was in UiTM Shah Alam. i was sooo nervous as it was my first interview. but i get my head straight and keep a smile on my face. when the interviewers asked to give an intro bout myself, i crapped. i even told them where was my kindergarten. they burst into laughter and so do i. this is what happen when you are too nervous. haha :D they even asked me what is Cluster School. to be honest, i just blurted out anything that popped in my head that time. it wasn't even the right answer but they all nod. this is because i seemed confident and shamelessly answered it. hehe~ okay now for the written test. i strongly advise you to brush up your writing skill before you sit the exam. if i'm not mistaken it consisted of objective questions, summary and essay and the time limit is 1 hour. it is similiar to MUET or SPM paper just harder. but no worries. it's a piece of cake if you have a strong vocab :)
TESL in Institut Pendidikan Guru
now let's talk about how to enrol in IPG! before that let me get this clear, IPG does not only offer TESL course. it offers various of courses such as BM, Music, Pendidikan Islam, PJ, Science, Mathematic, Chemisty etc. i can't give the link to apply since it's constantly change (ikut tahun) but you can just click to Portal Rasmi Kementerian Pelajaran Malaysia for more info. if you are interested to become a teacher, then this is the right path for you!
Basic Requirements
it is important to be confident in both IPG and UiTM's interviews. fluent English. don't wear flashy outfits or too colourful outfits. don't forget all your documents. aware of current news. be polite and always SMILE :) anyway, start your interview with doa! it won't hurt you!
SHOULD I TAKE TESL?
still confused? most of the peeps won't dare to take up TESL cuz they are scared with the interview, not confident with their English, not interested in teaching. my dearest sisters and brothers, the interview is not a hell-like. think it as fun and you'll enjoy every moment of it! "I'm no good in English" is the common phrase i heard. sweetie, i'm not good as the native speakers too. you don't need the British accent to get into TESL. let me tell you something, TESL is a great path to improve your English hence enhance your vocabulary! :D if you are not interested in teaching, you can go to another career. you are not stuck being a teacher if you taking up TESL. unless if you are under IPG then you will have 5 years contract with the gov. after that you can say byebye and start a new career. from TESL you can become a lecturer, psychologist, translator (it give you a lot of money!) etc. for double fun, you'll receive RM430 allowance per month if you are an IPG students. for UiTM foundation, you'll also receive allowance. it's not scary as you thought :D i was once interested in pharmacy and i even get an offer to do pharmacy but i ended up here. why? cuz i think language is something very interesting plus English is a worldwide language! it's easier to spread your wings to oversea if your fundamental of English is strong. so all the best ^__^
GOODLUCK FOR THE INTERVIEW!
